The TQUK Level 1 Award in Principles of Health and Safety in the Workplace (RQF) is designed to raise awareness of health and safety and is applicable to anyone; particularly in preparation for entering a work environment. It is essential that everyone is aware of their own safety and the safety of customers, contractors and the public who might be affected by their actions.
The qualification covers the importance of health and safety in the workplace, hazards and risks, workplace conditions that can affect health and safety and the requirements for workplace procedures. The objectives of the qualification include meeting relevant programmes of learning, supporting a role in the workplace and giving learners personal growth and engagement in learning.

- Understand the importance of health and safety in the workplace
- State what is meant by health and safety at work.
- Define the key terms used in health and safety.
- State the main legal responsibilities of employers and employees with respect to health, safety and welfare in the workplace.
- Understand the scope of hazards and risks in the workplace
- Indicate the hazards and risks with reference to:
– Slips trips and falls
– Working at heights
– Manual handling
– Hazardous substances
– Machinery and vehicles
– Electricity
– Fire
– Stress.
- Indicate the hazards and risks with reference to:
- Understand the range of workplace conditions that can affect health and safety
- Identify the benefits of maintaining a tidy, well organised workplace
- State the importance of maintaining suitable environmental conditions
- Outline the welfare facilities that should be provided.
- Identify the different classes of health and safety signage.
- Understand the requirements for workplace procedures
- Explain the need for reporting accidents, ill health, dangerous events and near misses.
- Identify the purpose of first – aid provision
- Identify the types and uses of personal protective equipment
- Outline the importance of personal hygiene.
